The Roselle Public Library, in cooperation with 100 Illinois libraries in Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Will Counties, will become part of SWAN Libraries beginning December 9. Roselle Public Library District will be joining SWAN along with Glenside Public Library District and Warrenville Public Library District to bring the number of libraries in the consortium to 100.
SWAN offers an online public access catalog with over 8 million items available to patrons of the 100 member libraries.
Libraries choose to join shared catalogs, or consortium, to provide their patrons with access to materials from all the libraries in the consortium. This benefits patrons by allowing them to search thousands more titles and have those titles delivered by RAILS to the patron’s home library. Illinois library patrons share more than 18 million items annually, greatly broadening the number of catalog items available to an individual library user.
Monday, November 23: Roselle Public Library will begin the migration to SWAN (System Wide Automated Network). A partial catalog freeze will be in effect through Tuesday, December 8.
During this period, our Library cannot add new material to the library catalog. This means you will see a delay in the latest Best Sellers being on the shelf. Other than the availability of brand new materials for you to check out, this freeze should have minimal impact on you.
A "Checkout-Only" Period will be in effect from Friday, December 4 - Tuesday, December 8.
CAN DO: During this time, you can check out materials, but that activity will not be reflected immediately in My Account in the online catalog. During this time you can search for materials in the online catalog, pick up holds if you've been notified, and check out materials at the Library. You can also access e-resources like OverDrive, Axis360, and Hoopla on apps/websites.
CAN'T DO: During this time, you can't see the availability of materials in the online catalog, place holds, or log in to My Account. You also can not pay bills, check items in, or renew materials during this period. Additionally, you will not be able to download electronic materials or place holds from the online catalog or receive materials from another library during the "checkout-only period".
December 9 - Discover your new catalog!
The new catalog goes live! The Roselle Public Library District will become a member of the larger library network, SWAN. This means more unique titles to share between the 100 Chicagoland libraries that make up the SWAN consortium. More books, audiobooks, movies, TV shows and music will be available for you to borrow! You will enjoy access to over 8 million items. You will be able to use your library card at any SWAN public library in the area. Our library will become 1 of 100 libraries sharing seamlessly.
SWAN (System Wide Automated Network) Library Services is a consortium founded in 1974 that presently boasts over 90 member libraries in the Chicagoland area, including Roselle’s neighboring libraries in Bloomingdale and Itasca. SWAN offers a shared online public access catalog with nearly 10 million items available to patrons of member libraries. Roselle Public Library users will have access to this unique collection that includes materials from public, college, and special libraries across Illinois. Illinois is a leader nationally in promoting the sharing of library resources.
